Phase 4: Design Integration Strategies

In order to best teach this unit students will be participating in whole class instruction and small group activities. Throughout this unit students will be engaged in many different reading and writing activities that utilize technology. Students will be working in small groups to complete various tasks in the webquests and software programs. In order to ensure the students understand how to use the technology in this plan, we will demonstate how to use the programs to the whole class before allowing small groups of students to compelte the tasks.

Day 1:

Today the students will be introduced to the website www.storylineonline.net. The teacher will turn on the LCD projector in the classroom so that all the students can see. The class will listen and view the story A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. After listening and viewing the story, the teacher will explain how to use Kidspiration software to create a graphic organizer. The teacher will demonstrate how to create a web connecting the text to their lives. The title of the story will be in the middle of the web, each connecting frame will be an event from the story to make a total of 4 events. From the event frames, the teacher will create another frame that tells how the students related the story event to their lives. Once the class has created their web, the teacher will read it aloud to review.

Day 2:

Students will be assigned to small groups. Each group will visit www.storylineonline.net and select the story Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. After listening to the story the group will visit http://storybookipedia.sblc.wikispaces.net/Enemy+Pie+Activities. They will choose one of the graphic organizers that incorporate writing prompts from the site to recreate in Kidspiration (as modeled by the teacher on Day 1). Once they finish their organizer, each group will print their work and submit it to the teacher for a grade.

The students will be evaluated on completion, correct usage of the software, accurate placement of concepts and ideas from the book in the graphic organizer.

Day 3:

In their small groups, students will be asked to visit www.storylineonline.net to listen and view the story Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli. The group will visit the following webquest and complete the writing activities.
Webquest: http://questgarden.com/85/91/3/090805073950/index.htm

The students will be evaluated on the completion of their writing assignment as suggested on the webquest, and for usage of clip art in their project.

Day 4:

Each group will choose one organizer that they have created to present and share with the class. Students may use the ELMO projector to display their organizer. Students will be evaluated on their presentation.

Day 5:

Today the students will be able to choose a story from www.storylineonline.net and create a web in Kidspiration connecting the text to their lives. This assignment will be completed independently. The completed organizer should be printed and submitted to the teacher. At the end of reading instruction time, the teacher will give a quick oral survey to the class providing feedback about the multimedia unit. Students will put their heads down and thumbs up or down in response to the teacher's questions.

The students will be evaluated on the creation of a graphic organizer in Kidspiration. We will be looking for accurate connections of text to self.
